  • The 5 Stages of Locs

    1. Starter Locs (3-6 months)

In this early stage, your locs require high maintenance. The duration as "starter locs" depends on your hair type. Be patient as your hair begins the locking process.

    2. Budding Stage (6-12 months)

Expect frizz and puffiness as your locs start to form. The new growth will matte, so it’s important to keep your roots separated between maintenance appointments. Thorough cleansing is essential to prevent buildup and weak spots.

    3. Teen Stage (12-15 months)

At this stage, your locs will begin to sprout in different directions, and you might wonder what's happening. Don’t worry—this is part of their development! Your locs will plump and take shape. It’s a great time to experiment with accessories like scarves and headbands.

    4. Mature Stage (1 year +)

Your locs will start to lay flat and hang down as they firm up. Maturing can begin as early as one year into your journey, though looser hair textures may take longer to fully mature.

    5. Rooted/Adult Stage (Several years)

Your locs are now fully mature, firmly in place, and will feel heavier and more slender. It may take a few years to reach this stage, depending on hair type and maintenance.

  • Do’s:

    • Protect your hair while sleeping: Use a satin or silk scarf to retain moisture and reduce breakage.

    • Use light oils: Opt for oils like peppermint, jojoba, or grapeseed to prevent buildup.

    • Wash with care: Protect your locs during washing with a mesh cap to prevent unraveling.

    • Separate the roots: This helps to keep your new growth from matting between appointments.

    • Style lightly: Keeping your locs styled will prevent unnecessary touching and keep them intact.

    Don’ts:

    • Don’t wash too often: Over-washing strips your hair of natural oils needed for growth.

    • Don’t retwist too frequently: Retwist only once a month to allow your locs to thicken and strengthen.

    • Avoid tight styles: Your scalp is adjusting, so reduce tension by avoiding tight hairstyles.

    • Avoid heavy products: Stay away from products like hair wax, coconut oil, and thick butters that can cause buildup. Opt for water-based products like rose water or aloe vera.

    • Don’t skip moisturizing: Locs still need moisture, so keep them hydrated with light oils or mists.

    • Don’t delay retwisting for too long: Waiting too long increases the risk of locs unraveling or roots combining.

    • Don’t compare: Every loc journey is unique. Your locs will look different from others, and that’s perfectly okay!
